Equatorial Guinea agreed on Friday to step in as a replacement for Morocco, which was removed from the tournament after asking for the final of the 2015 African Nations Cup to be postponed over fears the Ebola virus had spread. The CAF has changed its rules to exclude Equatorial Guinean President Teodoro Obiang and his team from a tournament due to the use of unqualified players and to allow his home country to participate in the 16-team field, the federation said in a statement and agreed to host the event from 5 to 9 July at its headquarters in Gueckedou, South West Africa. Equatorial Guinea showed up at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and lifted a ban on the country's participation in last year's tournament in South Africa.
The TU Alicante, a non-governmental organization focused on improving the transparency of its members, said in a statement on its website.
This is one of the various projects that Equatorial Guinea is investing in, creating jobs and opportunities for people. It is linked to the African Development Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
The country has a long-standing relationship with MPRI, which was previously entrusted with providing comprehensive best practice training for its police and security forces. Equatorial Guinea has a number of partnerships with American companies and has reached companies such as Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, McDonald's and CocaCola. The African Cup of Nations 2012 was hosted in Malabo and Bata by the African Football Confederation (AFC) and the International Federation of Football Associations (IFA).
Angola and Gabon have also been mentioned as possible alternatives but, although there is speculation, they have ruled themselves out of the running. Qatar, the 2022 World Cup host, has been chosen, leading to calls for the African World Cup to be held in Asia. Equatorial Guinea is ranked ninth in the Human Development Index, which ranks it 121st out of 177 countries because it does not have a GDP above $30,000.
